BACKGROUND: Vladimir Chernyshev of Murom, Russia has made available to FEEFHS for posting on this website merchant and noble family surname indexes for the region of Murom Russia. It is a product of a decade of his archival research as a historian and genealogist.

He explains in his own words:

"I have collected many items of information about merchant dynasties in Rusian state archives for the last 10 years. To date I have managed to reveal 369 merchant families during the period from 1723 for 1917. I have worked in Moscow in the Russian state archive of the ancient acts and documents, in the regional archive of city Vladimir, Nizhni Novgorod and my native city of Murom."

"Each surname represents a separate file. In it I have assembled a chronological sequence of the extracts from archival materials, with the indication of a source. The circle of sources is very extensive. It is auditings, census, records from church books about birth, wedding and death; obituaries, probate records, actions of proceedings and items of information regarding private property, houses, ground, manufacture."

"I also have available some photos of separate dynasties and pictures of the kept houses at which they lived. The general listing of all materials has made about 600 pages, written in Russian, not including graphic files."

"At the same time I have also collected information on various nobile families living in Murom. Among them there are representatives old Russian nobility dynasties. I will be sending a surname list of Nobility to FEEFHS soon. The materials about nobility are assembled by the same principle, as well as about merchant."

"Unfortunately, I do not have an opportunity to publish my research in Russia today. I shall be very glad, if you will find an opportunity to help me."

Anyone seriously interested in contracting for professional research concerning a specific Murom family listed in the surname index below is invited to contact Vladimir Chernyshev (see bottom of this page).
