Hands-on workshops during the 2024 FEEFHS Conference

The following workshops are offered:

Finding the Village of Origin (by Joane Sher) 

It is virtually impossible to do research in Eastern Europe without first knowing the name of the village where your ancestors came from. A country name or even a general area is too broad. Having this village information will enhance your experience during the conference.

This will be a morning workshop. In the afternoon you have the possibility to have one-on-one consultations with the presenter in the FamilySearch library. 

Emigration and Immigration [exact title TBD] (by Baerbel Johnson) 

This workshop explores the emigration process from Germany, the emigration itself with all its challenges, and the immigration process into the United States, with all its paper trails left behind. Some case studies will also be presented. 

MyHeritage From A To Z – All You Need To Know And A Bit More (by Daniel Horowitz) 

Building a family tree online has a number of unique advantages, and one of them is that you can take advantage of the unique features of the platform you’re using. In this session, Daniel will introduce you to the MyHeritage platform and give you an overview of its features, showing you how you can grow your tree quickly and efficiently thanks to MyHeritage’s advanced technologies. You’ll learn the basics of building a family tree online: how to create family member profiles, fill in details, and discover new information and family members to add to your tree. 

Interpreting German Script in Genealogy Records (by Marissa Gardner) 

Along with some history of German script, this workshop will provide the tools and resources to become a wizard at reading German-language records! Participants will also receive guided hands-on practice interpreting these documents, including German civil records, church records, emigration papers, gazetteers, and more! 

Cyrillic Handwriting (by Hailey Thompson) 

This workshop will go beyond the basics of the Cyrillic alphabet to practicing reading handwritten documents, focusing on Russian-language examples.
